Nokia to take full control of Symbian - Will it hurt Google??
Image via WikipediaNokia, the world’s largest mobile maker, has stepped up the pressure on Apple and Google, the US technology companies, after offering on Tuesday to buy Symbian, which makes operating systems for so-called smart mobile phones.
The Finnish company wants to acquire the 52 per cent of Symbian that it does not already own for around $410m and then offer Symbian’s software for free use as an operating system for mobile phone handsets.
The move means that Symbian’s software will compete directly with operating systems used by Research In Motion, maker of the Blackberry, Apple, maker of the iPhone, and Microsoft. The proposed Symbian deal also comes ahead of the release of Google’s own Android operating system later this year.
The deal is significant because smart phones will provide the next battleground in the development of the mobile phone industry.
